STUDENT PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The students will be confronted in an intensive 4 day workshop with the area of “El Raval” in
Barcelona. The aim is to teach the students how to deal and how to react in a short period of time
within a new context. Cities are always in a process of transition and transformation. The Raval is
chosen as an example of an inner city area with a strong historic heritage, which has experienced
major changes during the past decades and which is still in a process of continuous changes.
STEP ONE:
On a first approach the students have to walk around the Raval individually or in small groups,
observe and experience the atmosphere of the “barrio” and take pictures with regard to the
following topics:
- “what is characteristic for the Raval”
- “what are the positive qualities of the Raval”
- “what are the negative qualities of the Raval”
A selection of these pictures will be shown and briefly commented at the beginning of day 2.
STEP TWO:
Based on their observations, the students have to propose a vision/strategy as an answer for the
following questions:
- how can the character of the Raval be maintained?
- how can the positive quality of the Raval be improved?
Students will present their strategy in an “open space”. In continuation working groups will be
formed of 4 students each from different schools and disciplines according to which
vision/strategy they want to develop.
STEP THREE:
The third step will be the further development of the vision/strategy into a clear concept which
transforms the initial answer into a project/ intervention. The students have to develop a way to
express and communicate their answers in a project/ intervention for a public place of the Raval.
They can choose their media: drawing, sculpture, multimedia, dance, lyrics, etc.
STEP FOUR:
The final step is the presentation and explanation of these vision/strategies in a final Review with
the teachers.
